comments and emails

I really do love it when the bloggers that I read come all the way over to my site to read my posts as well. I also love it when they comment. It makes me feel all gooey inside.

I also love getting new readers that comment on my site. That makes me feel all gooey inside too.

But, I am horrible, HORRIBLE at returning emails to comments. I really am. And I’m sure I’ve lost a few readers because of my lacksidasical ways. Most of the bloggers I know take the time to respond thoughtfully to their readers. I, on the other hand, recognize the gooey feeling and turn back to my Google Reader. Why? WHY? Am I that important that I can’t take the time to respond?

Well, sometimes I’ll respond with an email, but I don’t always have the time right that second. Next thing I know, my inbox is filled and I don’t even know where to begin. Sometimes I’ll even comment after the comments, but really… who comes back to read the comments from a post posted a few days ago? I can barely keep track of all my comments on other people’s site. That’s why a lot of sites use the Subscribe to Comments plugin and now this blog does too. Yay!

So, that’s great, right? You come here, comment and then choose to be notified of any further comments to this post. I even included the form to subscribe to comments without having to comment first. Pretty handy if you are thinking of something witty to say, but have to go change the baby’s diaper first (because we all know you’ll end up making dinner too and then folding the laundry and you’ll never make it back to comment on the post).

But! I want even more functionality than that. That’s why I also installed the Comment Email Responder plugin. Now I can respond to your comments with ease. My response to you will show up as a new comment in the thread, but will be emailed personally, from my blog, to you. VERY handy. (Unless it’s a more personal response that doesn’t need to be on the site, in which case I’ll use the good old fashion way of response, regular email.)

So, keep the comments coming, people. I really do like the gooey feeling. Don’t we all? And with you commenting and me responding we’ll splatter happy comment goo all over this Internet Land.

  1. The email responder plug-in sounds awesome!

I will be adding that tomorrow. Or next week 🙂

  2. See, look how quick my reply is!

There’s a few things to know about the install, and the instructions aren’t that clear on his page. But I got it to work, with a little bit of geekiness. Let me know if you need help.

Or if other’s need help too, I can do a post about it.

  3. this is one of the exact reasons why i have been considering switching to wordpress. but somehow, it looks daunting compared to typepad. boo. 🙁

  4. @Sarcomical It only seems daunting from afar, but those who change from TypePad to WordPress are so happy that they did. If you have access to your server, it really is a cinch. I totally recommend it.
