Modest Mouse concert in Calgary

Ok, to be honest, this is a little late, but I (Master or my own Domain, if you will), am going to slightly back date this an hour and a half so I can get in my post for November 2nd.

You see, I’ve been up since 6am and on the road since 7:20am to take Teege to his first concert, ever. Modest Mouse.

We waited around a lot today so I had plenty of time to gather content and compost this post. In my head. The organizers opened the doors late due to an equipment truck getting searched at the border, or at least that was the rumour going around. Then after waiting in line there, we waited in line at the Merch Table to get Teege his hoodie and Doug and I our shirts. Then we waited in another line just to get into the Hall. When we were finally let in, we walked very quickly to the front of the stage where we waited for the first band to start, Love as Laughter. They were awesome. Then we waited for the very bizarre second band, Man Man, to change into their costumes and get their mics working. Finally we waited for the Modest Mouse sound check before we heard any sort of music from them. That’s a lot of waiting.

But when they did make it onto the stage, they were unbelievable. Just as I thought they’d be even 9 years ago when I fell in love with them, Modest Mouse played the shit out of every song on their set list. And, thanks to Doug’s quick thinking, we have an original set list tucked away as a keepsake of Teege’s first concert. Teege and I were happy with what they played (Tiny Cities Made of Ashes and Paper Thin Walls), but they neglected to play Dramamine (my personal fave.) But that’s ok. I wouldn’t have traded tonight with any other night.

If you are a friend on Facebook or Flickr, you might see the very few photos I took with my camera when I wasn’t playing Quarterback on Team Safe Teege. Seriously, why can’t people just bop up and down, like me, and enjoy the music? Why must everyone push people over and crowd surf? It’s such a distraction for those who come to see, feel, hear and experience the show.

Doug has his camera(s) out, but was busted with the biggie. The little one was used for the majority of the photos, plus a little video (half a song) that I managed to record before getting the shut down too. Either way, his photos will be better than mine.

  2. They were actually selling a few more tickets at the TicketMaster wicket, just before the gig. If I had known, I would have told you. In fact, as we were standing in line to get in, I was in the middle of texting my friend Marsha that there were tickets available, but before I hit send, they “sold out”.

  3. I was at the show too. I thought it was fantastic. The crowd and band both had a lot of energy. Would it be possible for you to post the set list? There was one song that I didn’t recognize and it would be nice to know what it was. Thanks!

  4. I miss going to so many concerts, you seem to get to them all. And you seem to enjoy such a wide range of music.
